Rektguy is a collection of 8,814 NFTs, created on the Ethereum blockchain in May 2022. It was
made by digital artist Ovie Faruq (OSF), with help from his co-founder Mando, artist AlienQueen,
and even his family.
Each NFT shows a cartoon skull figure — a person who looks like a tired crypto trader who lost
money, or in Web3 slang, someone who got “rekt”. This sad-but-funny character wears a hoodie,
holds a drink, and shows the real-life emotions that many crypto fans feel during market crashes.
How Rektguy Was Born
Before NFTs, OSF worked at Barclays Bank, but he didn’t enjoy his job. In his free time, he would
draw for fun. One day, he made a simple sketch of a skull wearing a hoodie, holding a coffee cup
with “gm” written on it.
At the same time, OSF was learning about blockchain and NFTs. He started making digital art and
launched his first NFT project called Degenz. But the real spark happened in October 2021, when he
turned the “gm” skull doodle into a 1-of-1 NFT.
People loved the raw, honest vibe — and by January 2022, the full idea for Rektguy was ready. A
few months later, the full NFT collection launched and instantly gained popularity.
Built for the Community
From the start, Rektguy was all about its people. Anyone who owned OSF’s earlier NFTs (like
Degenz) could mint Rektguy for free. Also, since it’s a CC0 project, anyone can use their Rektguy
image to make merch, art, or products without asking for permission.
Real-World Events
Rektguy brought its online culture into the real world with fun events. In June 2022, they hosted The
Rekt Show in New York City at a famous burlesque venue. The party was wild — and showed how
strong and excited the community was. Later, similar events were held in London and New York
again.
Tattoo Challenges
In September 2022, OSF made a promise: if the Rektguy floor price (the cheapest NFT in the
collection) hit 1 ETH, he would get a tattoo that said “rekt”.
The community pushed hard — and by December 2022, they hit the goal. OSF got inked in Paris
and shared the pictures online. Soon, other holders got tattoos too, proving their love and loyalty.
Rektguy Goes Bigger: Brands, Drinks & Tokens
Rekt Brands
In mid-2024, OSF announced Rekt Brands, a company built to grow the Rektguy universe. He gave
out shares of the company to NFT holders — a first for any big NFT project.
Rekt Drinks
In October 2024, the team launched Rekt Drinks — a fizzy water drink you could buy using regular
money or crypto (like SOL). It was a big hit, selling over 222,000 cans in just two days!
Rekt Rewards
People who supported the brand could collect DRANK points by sharing on social media or buying
drinks. These points would later unlock cool stuff in the ecosystem.
$REKT Token
In November 2024, Rektguy launched its own token called $REKT. It quickly grew to a $12.2 million
market cap and is now used to power many parts of the Rektguy world.
